Why convert RTF to OpenDocument?

Public-sector handoffs: someone sends RTF, the archive wants ODT. Or you are standardizing on LibreOffice and do not want a folder of mixed .rtf leftovers.

How this conversion runs

Same hub as the other RTF outputs: control-word parse, HTML blocks, then text:p / emphasis styles in content.xml. PNG/JPEG picts embed under Pictures/.

Keep in mind for RTF → OpenDocument

Writer's own RTF import may understand more vendor extensions. Compare a sample if layout is contractual. This path is honest about the subset: body text and basic emphasis.

After you have a OpenDocument file

Open in LibreOffice, set language, export PDF from Writer if needed. Keep the RTF only if a regulator asked for the original bytes.

Is ODT required if I already have RTF?

Only if policy says so. RTF is already an interchange format. ODT is better for long-term Writer editing and for ISO-minded archives.

Will Writer show tracked changes from RTF?

This converter does not map RTF revision marks. Accept/reject in Word first if that matters.

Rich Text Format

A text-based interchange format from Microsoft for basic rich text: fonts, colors, bold/italic, and simple pictures.

RTF was designed so Word, WordPad, TextEdit, and mail clients could exchange formatted text without the full Word binary. It is verbose (control words like \b, \i, \par) but human-inspectable. Fidelity is lower than DOCX: no modern styles, limited tables, and vendor-specific extensions.

OpenDocument Text

The ISO text format used by LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice: a ZIP of XML, the open counterpart to DOCX.

ODT is part of the OpenDocument family (ODS spreadsheets, ODP presentations). Governments and open-source shops standardize on it. Internally it is content.xml plus styles, metadata, and media. Conversion through HTML maps text:h / text:p / tables onto HTML equivalents.
